Tempur vs Dunlopillo: The Singapore Guide to Contour Pillows for Neck Pain

A Tempur Original pillow costs S$339 to S$429 in Singapore. A Dunlopillo Elite contour pillow costs S$118 to S$188. Neither brand takes a used pillow back.

So the choice has to be right before you pay. This guide sets out what each brand publishes, how memory foam and latex feel, how to pick a height for the way you sleep, and what the research says. It also covers the neck pain a pillow cannot reach: the kind that builds at your desk by mid-afternoon.

Disclosure

Dr Neck Pain is a structural chiropractic clinic in Singapore. We provide specialised treatment for people with chronic neck pain, and for the headaches, dizziness and posture problems that can start in the neck. We do not sell pillows and we earn nothing from Tempur or Dunlopillo.

The short version

  • Height decides more than brand. Tempur sells the Original in four heights. Dunlopillo sells its Elite contour in two. A pillow that is 2 cm wrong can hurt in either material.
  • The feel is different. Tempur memory foam yields slowly and cradles. Dunlopillo latex pushes back at once and feels springy.
  • Tempur costs more than double. S$429 for most sizes, against S$168 to S$188 for Dunlopillo’s high contour at current sale prices.
  • There is no trial. Both brands refuse returns on used pillows. Tempur gives a 3-year warranty on defects. Dunlopillo gives no warranty on pillows.
  • A pillow covers the hours you lie down. If your neck feels fine on waking and hurts by 3 pm, the pillow was not in use when the pain built.

Tempur Original vs Dunlopillo Elite Contour: What Each Brand Publishes

These are the two contoured neck pillows the brands sell in Singapore. Everything in the table comes from the brand’s own Singapore website, read on 12 October 2026.

Published by each brand, checked 12 October 2026. Heights are the tall edge and the low edge of the contour.

Is Tempur worth more than double? Price does not answer that. A S$429 pillow at the wrong height will hurt more than a S$168 pillow at the right one. Decide the feel first, then the height. The next three sections take you through both.

Memory Foam vs Natural Latex: How Each One Feels

The two materials behave in opposite ways when your head lands on them.

Tempur

You settle into it

Memory foam yields slowly under weight and warmth, then cups your head and neck. It returns to shape with a delay. Your head stays where you put it, and turning over takes a moment longer.

Dunlopillo

You float on it

Latex compresses and springs back at once. It holds your head up with a gentle push. Turning over is easy. Some people find that push too firm.

The heat question in Singapore

Tempur states that its foam reacts to temperature. Its care guide says to expect a firmer feel at 18°C or below, and a softer feel as the room gets warmer. Few Singapore bedrooms sit at 18°C. So the pillow may feel firmer in a cold showroom than in your bedroom with a fan, where you will sink in further.

Tempur also says its material does not generate heat, and it sells the SmartCool cover for people who want a cooler surface. Dunlopillo says the pinholes and open cells in its latex let air through. Both are the sellers’ own descriptions. We found no independent test that compares the two pillows in a warm bedroom, so we cannot tell you one sleeps cooler by a measured amount.

A rule of thumb from how the materials behave. Your own five-minute test in the shop outranks it.

The Sizing Trap: Why an Expensive Pillow Can Still Hurt

A contour pillow is closer to a pair of shoes than to a cushion. It comes in sizes, and the wrong size holds your neck bent for hours.

Too high

Your head is pushed up

On your back, your chin tips toward your chest. On your side, your head tilts up, away from the mattress.

Too low

Your head drops

On your back, your head falls backward. On your side, it sinks toward the mattress and the top shoulder rolls forward.

About right

Head in line with your body

On your side, your nose lines up with your breastbone. On your back, your face points at the ceiling and your chin feels neutral.

Three things set the height you need:

  • Sleep position. On your side, the pillow has to fill the width of your shoulder. On your back, it fills the hollow behind your neck, which is a smaller gap. On your stomach, almost any height turns and lifts the neck.
  • Your frame. Tempur’s own guide says a smaller body with a shorter head-to-shoulder distance suits a smaller pillow, and a larger body suits a larger one.
  • Your mattress. Tempur’s guide adds that on a softer mattress you sink in more, so you are likely to need a smaller pillow. A firmer mattress calls for a larger one.

Research backs the principle and stops short of a formula. A 2021 review of pillow-height studies concluded that height affects the alignment of the neck and the load on it, but that no firm conclusion exists on the best height for back or side sleeping (Lei 2021). A 2024 laboratory study of nine healthy side sleepers found that neck alignment tracked closely with pillow height relative to shoulder width, and that how comfortable a pillow felt was a poor guide to alignment (Tian 2024). In plain terms: the right height depends on your shoulders, and the pillow that feels nicest for two minutes is not always the one that keeps your neck straight.

The two brands differ here

Tempur gives you four heights to choose from. Dunlopillo gives you two, and they are 4 cm apart.

If you fall between Dunlopillo’s Low (10 cm) and High (14 cm), neither may fit. If you pick the wrong Tempur size, the firm contour makes the mistake hard to ignore. Either way, the fix is to test the height before you pay.

Pillow Finder: A Starting Height for Your Sleep Position

Answer three questions to get a starting size to test in each brand. We built the suggestions from the heights each brand publishes and from Tempur’s own sizing advice. They are a place to begin in the shop. They are not a prescription, and no study has tested them as a formula.

Your browser is too old to run the interactive finder. The size board below gives the same suggestions.

Pillow finder

Which size should you test first?

1. How do you mostly sleep?

2. Which describes you best?

3. What do you want the pillow to feel like?

Your starting point

Neither contour pillow is made for you.

Tempur and Dunlopillo both describe these pillows as for back and side sleepers. On your stomach, a tall contour lifts a neck that is already turned. A thin, soft pillow is the usual choice. If you wake with neck pain most days, try falling asleep on your side.

Height to test first

Side sleeper, smaller frame or soft mattress

Tempur Original M (10/7 cm). Drop to S if your head tilts up.
Dunlopillo Elite Low (10/8 cm).

Height to test first

Side sleeper, average frame

Tempur Original L (11.5/8.5 cm), with M as the fallback.
Dunlopillo Elite Low, then High. You may sit between the two (10 and 14 cm), so test both.

Height to test first

Side sleeper, larger frame or firm mattress

Tempur Original XL (13/10 cm), with L as the fallback.
Dunlopillo Elite High (14/12 cm).

Height to test first

Back sleeper, smaller frame or soft mattress

Tempur Original S (8/5 cm).
Dunlopillo Elite Low (10/8 cm). Check that your chin is not pushed down; it may still be too tall.

Tempur Original M (10/7 cm). Check it in both positions.
Dunlopillo Elite Low (10/8 cm).

Height to test first

Side and back, average frame

Tempur Original M or L. Pick the one that keeps your chin level on your back and your head level on your side.
Dunlopillo Elite Low (10/8 cm).

Height to test first

Side and back, larger frame or firm mattress

Tempur Original L (11.5/8.5 cm).
Dunlopillo Elite High (14/12 cm) only if your chin stays level on your back. If it does not, the Low.

Feel to test first

Start with Tempur.

Lie on it for five minutes so the foam warms and softens. Then lie on the Dunlopillo to confirm you do not prefer the lift.

Feel to test first

Start with Dunlopillo.

Roll from side to back on it. If the push-back feels like pressure under your ear or jaw, try the Tempur before you decide.

Feel to test first

Test both on the same day.

Five minutes on each, in the position you sleep in. Your neck feels different on different days, so a same-day test is the fair one.

Take the size above to the shop and run the fit check in the next section. New arm tingling, numbness or a worse headache on a new pillow means the fit is wrong. Stop using it, and see a doctor if the symptoms stay.

A buying aid only. It is not a diagnosis and it does not replace trying the pillow.

Test It Before You Pay: Neither Brand Takes a Used Pillow Back

Read before you pay

There is no home trial on either pillow in Singapore.

  • Tempur: its returns policy says products are non-exchangeable and non-refundable once bought. The exceptions are a damaged or faulty item, or the wrong item, reported at delivery.
  • Dunlopillo: its FAQ says it cannot refund a used pillow, and exchanges one for one only if the pillow is defective on delivery. Its 60-day Satisfaction Guarantee covers mattresses, not pillows.
  • Warranty: Tempur covers moulded pillows for 3 years against material defects or a dent deeper than 2 cm. Dunlopillo’s FAQ says pillows have no warranty.

Singapore’s Lemon Law covers goods that did not match the contract at delivery. It is not a right to return a pillow because the height does not suit you. So the shop test carries the whole decision.

Where to test. Dunlopillo lists its own galleries and studios at Marina Square, City Square Mall, Paya Lebar Quarter, West Mall, Lot One, Causeway Point and IMM. It also lists counters at TANGS VivoCity, Isetan Scotts, OG Albert and several COURTS stores. For Tempur, use the store finder on its Singapore website and ask which sizes are on display before you travel.

The first weeks at home

A new contour pillow often feels strange. Tempur’s care guide says the foam can take time to get used to, and suggests using the pillow as a cushion during the day for the first 2 to 3 weeks. A strange feel that settles is normal. Pain that gets worse is not. Stop using the pillow if you get new arm tingling, numbness, morning headaches or neck pain that climbs night after night. A pillow is not meant to hurt your neck into shape.

Change one thing at a time. If you swap the pillow, the mattress topper and your sleep position in the same week, you will not know which one helped.

What the Research Says About Pillows for Neck Pain

No trial has compared a Tempur Original with a Dunlopillo Elite. The research is on pillow materials and shapes in general. It is still the nearest evidence there is.

The honest summary

The right pillow can reduce neck pain on waking. Shape and height matter more than the material label.

A 2021 systematic review pooled 35 studies, nine of them high quality with 555 participants. It found that rubber (latex) and spring pillows reduced neck pain, waking symptoms and disability in people with chronic neck pain, and that pillow design did not change sleep quality. It also concluded that the shape and height of the pillow may affect neck alignment more than the material does (Pang 2021).

  • Latex did well in a field trial. Side sleepers without neck problems tried five pillow types for a week each. The latex pillow produced the fewest waking symptoms and the feather pillow the most. The foam contour pillow did no better than the regular-shaped foam pillow (Gordon 2010). In plain terms: in that study the material mattered, and the contour shape alone did not.
  • A fitted pillow helped mornings most. In a 4-week trial of 36 adults with chronic neck pain, a semi-customised cervical pillow lowered neck disability scores and morning pain compared with usual pillows. The difference in evening pain was not statistically significant (Erfanian 2004).
  • A memory foam pillow with springs beat advice alone. In a crossover trial of 70 adults with chronic neck pain, four weeks on the pillow reduced neck pain and headache more than education did. The authors noted that education may not have been the best comparison (Vanti 2019).

These are small, short studies. None followed people for more than a few weeks, and none tested the two pillows in this guide. What they support is modest: a pillow that fits can make mornings better.

Why Your Neck Still Hurts at 3 pm

A pillow works for the hours you are lying down. For the other sixteen or so, your neck holds your head up against gravity, and the pillow is at home on the bed.

So the timing of your pain is a useful clue. It is a rule of thumb, not a diagnosis.

On waking

Stiff in the morning, easier once you move

Look at the pillow height and your sleep position first. This is the pattern the pillow trials improved.

By 3 pm

Fine on waking, worse as the day goes on

The pillow was not in use when this pain built. Look at the hours you spend upright: the desk, the screen, and the shape of the neck itself.

A head weighs roughly 4.5 to 5.5 kg. A widely cited biomechanical model by Hansraj (2014) estimated the effective load on the neck rising to about 27 lb at 15 degrees of forward tilt and about 60 lb at 60 degrees. That is a mathematical model, not a measured injury threshold. The direction is the useful part: the further forward the head sits, the harder the neck muscles work through the day.

The posture people usually mean by “tech neck” is forward head posture. Start with the cheap fixes: our guide to an ergonomic workstation setup covers screen and chair heights, and our four-week tech neck plan covers the habits. If the afternoon pain comes with a headache that starts at the base of the skull, read about cervicogenic headache.

Dr Will’s clinical view

A pillow supports the neck you bring to bed. It does not change the neck you carry to work.

Dr Will’s clinical view, from 29 years and more than 3,000 patients, is that structure dictates function, and in his experience every person with tech neck has some deviation from the normal cervical curve. He works to a target range of 30 to 40 degrees. This is a clinician’s observation, not a trial result.

Afternoon pain does not prove a structural problem. A poor desk setup, stress, a hard week and too little movement can all do it. But if you have changed pillows more than once and the same pain returns at the same time each day, that is a reason to measure and stop guessing. A standing X-ray shows the curve of the neck. It can also show that your curve is normal, which rules structure out.

These are different tools for different jobs. The table sets out what each is for and what it leaves unmeasured. Our own row is marked, and it is chiropractic, not physiotherapy.

One Dunlopillo Elite High contour pillow costs S$168 at the current sale price. Our first visit also costs S$168. Neither is a promise of an outcome. One buys support for the night. The other buys a measurement of the neck you use all day. Many people will want both, in that order: fit the pillow, and measure if the daytime pain stays.

Our results page shows X-ray readings from our own patients, each labelled as one patient and not typical.

When a Pillow Is the Wrong Tool

See a doctor first

These are not pillow problems.

  • Numbness, tingling or weakness spreading into an arm or hand, or clumsiness with a key or coin.
  • Balance changes, bladder or bowel changes, fever, or severe pain at night that does not ease when you change position.
  • Neck pain after an injury or fall, or a sudden severe headache.

Arm symptoms can mean a pinched nerve; see cervical radiculopathy, cervical spondylosis and cervical disc herniation. Tightness across the shoulders and between the shoulder blades that lasts for weeks is covered under neck and shoulder pain, upper back pain and myofascial pain syndrome.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Tempur or Dunlopillo better for side sleepers?

Either can work, and the height decides it. Side sleepers need the pillow to fill the width of the shoulder. Tempur sells four heights up to 13 cm. Dunlopillo sells 10 cm and 14 cm. Broad-shouldered side sleepers can start with the Tempur XL or the Dunlopillo High, then check that the head sits level.

Why does my neck hurt worse with a contour pillow?

The most common reason is the wrong height for your position. Too high pushes the chin down or tilts the head up. Too low lets the head drop. Try the low edge, then a size down. If you get arm tingling, numbness or a worse headache, stop using it and see a doctor.

Can a good pillow fix tech neck?

No. A pillow supports your neck while you sleep and does not change how you hold your head during the day. Tech neck is a label for posture-related strain from long hours looking down. See our four-week tech neck plan, linked above, for the daytime habits.

Is a Tempur pillow worth the money in Singapore?

It is worth it if you like the slow, moulded feel and one of its four heights fits you. At S$429 for most sizes it costs more than double a Dunlopillo Elite High at S$168 to S$188. You cannot return it once bought, so test the exact size first.

Is a Tempur pillow too hot for Singapore?

Some people find memory foam warm, and Tempur says its foam does not generate heat. The foam does soften as it warms, so it will feel softer in a warm bedroom than in a cold showroom. Tempur sells a SmartCool cover version from S$439. We found no independent test comparing it with latex in a warm room.

How long does it take to get used to a contour pillow?

Tempur’s care guide suggests the first 2 to 3 weeks. A strange feel that settles is normal. Pain that gets worse each night is a sign the height or shape is wrong for you.

Can I return a pillow that does not suit me?

Not at either brand. Tempur states its products are non-exchangeable and non-refundable once bought. Dunlopillo states it cannot refund a used pillow. Both will act on a pillow that is defective on delivery.
